The Eyelike story started all the way back in 2012, in a small apartment in Jakarta, where Chrystaline and Desti had a simple idea to make straps for their glasses. Little did they know where this spark of creativity would take them.
Born and raised in Berlin, Chrystaline took her first steps in the fashion industry when she decided to study a fashion BA in London. Living in such a modern, cosmopolitan city, she got the opportunity to explore trends from a vast array of influences and styles – from the outrageous to the elegant, bizarre crazes to revolutions in practicality. With this newly acquired knowledge, she would move to Jakarta, her parent’s hometown, to explore her roots and further delve into the international world of fashion design.
At around about the same time, Desti moved from the smaller city of Semarang to the hustle and bustle of Jakarta, to work as a distinguished stylist to the stars and PA for some of the top Indonesian celebrities. Over the next few years, she established herself as a highly reputable member of Indonesia’s fashion industry. With an eye for style and talent, it was only a matter of time until Desti and Chrsytaline would cross paths and inevitably become close friends. So much so that, after a short time, they became like siblings - laughing and joking constantly and sometimes arguing over anything and everything.
So, in 2012, by which time they were sharing an apartment together, the girls finally found a project in which to focus all their creative energy. Chrystaline wanted a pretty strap to dangle her sunglasses from and when they put their heads together, Eyelike was born.
It was never meant to turn into a full-fledged business, but when people started noticing the beautiful accessories the girls had made, they realized they were on to something. At the beginning, Desti and Chrystaline only made a few samples to sell at a local market but the response was overwhelmingly positive.
Since then, the girls have gone on to sell straps to people all over the world for over 6 years. During which time, they’ve sold at bazaars in Singapore and even been invited all the way to Berlin. A crucial turning point was, of course, when the girls moved to Bali together to really give Eyelike a go. Things went from good to great there. They were able to hire professional staff to assemble the carefully designed pieces and explore the use of different, high-quality and locally sourced materials.
The key to their success is an obvious one. Eyelike is an essential you never knew you needed until you buy your first set. The straps add a stylish touch to any glasses, and any outfit for that matter. Their practicality is undeniable and the designs are all amazing. But, the best thing about these unique accessories is; how they have all very obviously been made with a lot of love and care – from the initial drawings in Chrystaline and Desti’s Jakarta apartment, to the putting together of every little detail, by hand in Bali, by the Eyelike staff, who share just as much appreciation for the brand as the girls do, because they’re treated as friends, with respect, love and the conditions that every worker should have.
